The 'experts' call this caffeine dependence - not addiction. Either way though, withdrawal from caffeine dependence can be difficult, including headaches, anxiety, change in mood, decreased energy and/or difficulty concentrating. On the bright side though, withdrawal symptoms typically last for just a few days. The question really is though, do we really have to completely kick the caffeine to the curb, or can we still enjoy the occasional cup?
There have been more than 19,000 studies on caffeine and coffee, in an attempt to determine its exact effects on the human body.
Frank Hu, MD, MPH, PhD, nutrition and epidemiology professor at the Harvard School of Public Health, says “there is certainly much more good news than bad news, in terms of coffee and health.”
In the majority of healthy adults, moderate amounts of caffeine is not bad. It may even have positive effects. Aside from increased alertness and concentration, recent studies show the potential benefits of caffeine include:
- Lower Dementia Risk.
- More endurance during workouts.
- Reduced risk of Parkinson's disease, liver disease, colorectal cancer & type 2 diabetes.
- Decreased allergic reactions because of caffeine's ability to reduce histamines.
- Improved immune function from caffeine’s anti-inflammatory effects.
Happy Monday Lovelies!

thank GOD I don't drink coffee. Once in a while I do, just for the sake of feeling posh and modern, but not often at all, I assure you. I try to drink plenty of water instead.
ReplyDeleteIm definitely caffeine dependant. I have at least 2 cups of coffee a day and a tea. In Bg/Opatija.. its turkish coffee 10x a day!! xx
ReplyDeleteWow!! That is pretty amazing... how are you so smart!? :)
ReplyDeleteI definitely NEED my tea in the morning... and one Diet Coke in the afternoon. Very interesting info!
ReplyDeleteI've read many articles on the benefits of caffeine... as with anything, moderation is key. I'm good with one cup a day, to get me through the long afternoons!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info :)

ReplyDeleteMy brother tells me all the time not to run after I drink my coffee because it's bad for my heart... I don't know how much caffeine he must think I am getting from one cup. lol
I cut myself off by 3pm anyways so that I can sleep.
Thanks again!

interesting post! thanks for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteModeration is everything, methinks. I've never ever felt guilty about my caffeine consumption... I may be dependent, but I only drink 1-2 cups in the mornings, along with the very occasional afternoon/evening "dessert" latte, so I completely enjoy! :)

I love reinforcement when it comes to my coffee habit! :)
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't call myself caffeine dependant, although I do enjoy the occasional cup of coffee. Glad to know that it's not so bad after all.
ReplyDeleteThanks. :)
No matter what I decide to call it...I will not be giving up my coffee:)
ReplyDeleteI opt for oolong tea most of the time, or jasmine green tea. Coffee makes me too jittery, so if I do drink it I drink decaf when possible :)
ReplyDeletefun facts! I had no idea of the little list of benefits. I have such high energy that I can usually only drink about a half a cup in the mornings anyway, but good to know it's not totally for nothing :)
ReplyDeleteI've never liked coffee, but now...hmmmm... :)

Nice blog! Keep writing more! Loved your blog!
ReplyDeleteI've always been so confused about the facts of coffee after hearing so many contradicting things. I went through "withdrawal" (awful headaches) several times when I tried to taper off coffee. I just hate being dependent on it.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!

I think that, as with most things, coffee (and other forms of caffeine) are fine in moderation. Though it does interest me that they just call it "dependence" versus "addiction". Trying to keep it from getting a bad rap?
ReplyDeleteI can only drink a half cup of coffee. A full cup will give me serious jitters.
ReplyDeleteHope all is well with you and your family. :)
Talking about withdrawl symptoms.. you really need to post more. My general knowledge is very loww right now!
ReplyDeleteThis makes me feel much better about the 3 cups I had earlier! Thank you for posting this, I have been wondering how my habit has been affecting me! Have a great weekend:) MademoiselleMichael

My mother really teaches us not to drink coffee cos it can cause depression and nervousness. And also It can cause ulcers. Drinking coffee without taking any solid food can harm your stomach. But on the other side, it has also it's positive effect. It has anti-oxidant contents.
ReplyDeleteWell I sure like this a lot! mmm makes me feel a lot better about my morning coffee binges =)

Hi Iva and readers,
ReplyDeleteBeing portuguese, I'm used to drink a much stronger coffee than in most countries, although I don't drink it much.
Like all things in life, it's a matter of drinking with moderation.
Here we have the habit of drinking an expresso after lunch or dinner; usually lunch.
Some people drink an expresso in the morning, but I don't think it's a wise thing to do.
When I drink it's usually after lunch and sometimes in the afternoon. I will seldom drink an expresso at night, unless I have dinner in a restaurant.
An expresso here is still much cheaper than in many other countries, around 60 euro cents.
Do note that to make a good coffee, one needs a good machine (read Italian made) and good water.
Take care,
José
That's a very interesting read for a coffee lover like me! But again, I restrict myself into drinking just one cup a day just to ensure my health.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm, benefits of coffee? That is new to my ears. I stay away from coffee because of the addictive components. Maybe I need to rethink.......
ReplyDeleteI am doing a Giveaway:
