{image}So you might be wondering what in the world is it doing in our veggie burgers? According to the agricultural non-profit Cornucopia Institute, hexane is used to process most nonorganic soy ingredients in vegetarian burgers, protein shakes, & energy bars. It is also used to remove or lower fat content. And to add to it, depending on the extraction method, hexane can also be found in vegetable oils.
Before you rush and throw out all your veggie burgers, know that the ones which are completely organic or soy free are free from hexane. Tempeh and tofu products, made with whole soy beans are usually all ok, and Morningstar veggie burgers are made with soy are 100% hexane free. Other soy free veggie burgers are Amy's Organic California Veggie Burger and Asherah's Gourmet Organic Quinoa Vegan Burgers.
Happy Friday! Have a super weekend!

i am not brave enough to try these quite yet...its coming
ReplyDeleteI'm a total meat-eater, so no hexane worries for me! Lol :)
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
xoxo J
Thanks for this, it's always good to know what's inside your food :)), wishing you a fabulous weekend, xoxo
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up Iva. Unfortunately, there are a lot of chemicals in food and other consumer products that we are unaware of. It's quite scary when you really think about it.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
oh wow that's crazy! I'm a vegetarian going on 16 years and I haven't heard of this. I say it's just always better to eat food in its closest natural state :-)
ReplyDeleteHappy Friday!
PHEW! i have a LOT of morningstar products in my freezer! glad to hear that i don't need to chuck them!
ReplyDeleteoh wow! that's crazy!!!
ReplyDeletei'm so glad that the only veggie burgers i eat are morningstar! they are my fave! :) i eat one almost every day for lunch! num!
Hexane is a neurotoxin solvent used to remove oil from the soy bean so it comes in contact with the meal AND the oil. If you buy "expeller" pressed products(like olive oil), there is NO hexane used. Look at www.wholeharvest.com
ReplyDeleteGreat information. I love Morningstar so it's good to know I can still eat it!
ReplyDeleteOh wow! I did not know this. Seems like organic is always the best bet.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend :)
That's good news since Morningstar black bean burgers are my absolute fave. And have you encountered those new super thin buns they're selling at stores now? I love them! Morningstar burgers (chik patties, etc.) are so thin that they're often overwhelmed by bread when you use a regular size bun. I love the super thin ones (and only 100 calories each). thanks for the info :)
ReplyDeleteI wonder if boca burgers are ok? That's what we eat at my house.
ReplyDeleteLove this post, in fact, I love all your posts!! Thank you for this, I should pick up some morningstar veggie burgers ASAP!
ReplyDeleteOk looks like I am eating the hexane free ones! We try to eat mostly vegetarian so we eat a tons of these. Have a great weekend
ReplyDeleteOH WOW! Thanks for sharing. I'm vegetarian, and I love veggie burgers! I'll look out for the good ones now.
