I am incredibly behind on my reading...of books. So, I have made a promise to myself to take some time out and just read. I think that reading is very personal and that you should make your own rules and follow what's right for you {I think that about things in general too, not just books ;) }
- I let myself not finish a book. If I get a few pages into it and I'm just not feeling it, I quickly move on to the next one. Although when I did read Water for Elephants
, I was not interested in it for awhile, but still kept going and did end up getting hooked. So, I do make exceptions to my own rules.
- In some cases, I think it's perfectly acceptable to see the movie first.
- At times, I read more then one book at once.
- I don't reread books.
- I judge a book by its cover.
What are you reading this Summer?

I MAKE myself finish a book. I shouldn't, but I do. I can't read more than one book at a time though. My brain explodes!
ReplyDeleteI judge a book by its cover too. I mean, really, these days how hard is it to find a good designer? not very. no excuses.
ReplyDeleteSummer is the best time for reading. in a hammock. under a tree.
I'm intrigued by The Happiness Project. I'll be checking that out at the library soon. I am already exploring what it means to be a "whole" person and this sounds like it could really be a good perspective. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteguilty guilty guilty, i haven't read anything but blogs this sumer, oh and magazines and newspapers, do they count? xoxo
ReplyDeletethose look great! i just did a book post!!! i'll have to add a few of those to my list!
ReplyDeleteHey. I love posts on books. I promise I am not copying you but I am working on my book collage to post sometime this month :) I just have not had time to list all the books I intend on reading before the summer is over! I love reading 2-3 books at a time and I agree I don't finish them if I am not feeling it.
ReplyDeleteOoooh - I DO reread books. I can't help it. Some are SO good I can't wait to go back. I often have more than one book going at a time. And I agree: the cover is SO important.
ReplyDeleteHappy reading to you!
oxoxo

PS - posting a blog award for you right now on my site :)
Man, I really want to finish my current book so I can get more summer reading in. I've been reading Gone with the Wind forEVER now and while I'm thoroughly enjoying it, there is much more on my list to read!
ReplyDeletei definitely judge a book by its cover. you should read firefly lane and the help. they're such good books!
ReplyDelete@Nicole I LOVED The Help! Such a great book! I couldn't put it down! I will look into Firefly Lane! Thank you for the recs!
ReplyDeleteHah! About half of the books on your reading list are on mine! Definitely "The Happiness Project" and "Food Rules," and I just suggested "The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake" to my sci-fi book club!
ReplyDeleteI see we have the same taste in books, dear! lol
I shouldn't but I ALWAYS read the last page first!
ReplyDeleteI've desperately trying to read more lately, too. I used to read SO much, that as a teenager, my mom would ground me from books, because that's what I'd be distracted from my chores with ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks for your sweet comments, I really appreciate it! You are such a sweet soul <3
xoxo J
I definitely need to be doing some summer reading!
ReplyDeleteI also don't finish a book if I'm not liking it. I can't read a book with a bad cover, or bad paper. It's an object you keep in your hands and it has to fell good. I reread books ALL THE TIME. And I usually read a novel and nonfiction book at the same time. Right now I'm reading two italian authors, but my summer list is very long!!
ReplyDeleteBobbi
Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl -- I just am finishing up an essay on it right now for a summer reading assignment, but it is such a powerful book. highly recommended
ReplyDeleteWhat great suggestions! I've been meaning to read The Happiness Projects. sadly, i think i've been reading more magazines than books this summer! xoxo
ReplyDeleteI'm currently into Gone With the Wind. I've never read it, but my sis let me borrow it warning that (despite the gigantic size of the book) it was one of the best she'd ever read. She totally got hooked.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this list, it came at a perfect time -I am in need of some summer reading!
ReplyDeleteI love your book rules - I have them too - very similar! I thought I was the only one, so glad to know others make rules for themselves too :)
I'm so glad you did this post and listed books. I started compiling a list for summer reading and lost the list!! Good grief!
ReplyDeleteI'm way behind and have to shake a leg and get on it. Iva to the rescue! I noticed Nicole listed a couple too. Will check them out and make my selections. woot!
I like that you said you let yourself NOT finish a book! I usually try to force myself to finish even the most painful of books... but WHY?!
ReplyDeleteI always judge a book by its cover. It's the only thing that actually motivates me to pick it up.
ReplyDeletei like your flexible rules!
ReplyDeletelately i have been reading two books at a time. i tend to do this when one book isn't that THRILLING to me, but i feel like i should finish it since i started it.
i can think of only two books that i started and never finished. one was by carl jung. the other was the idiot by dostoyevsky. ay yi yi. oh wait. one more: ulysses by james joyce. could not even handle TWO PAGES of that book!
I'm reading a book called "An Italian Affair" right now that I can't put down! It's a memoir by Laura Fraser. I haven't decided what to read next . . . I love summer; I have so much time to read!
ReplyDeleteI am currently reading "Lords of Finance" and "London Fields". I recommend "The Glass Room" by Simon Mawer, its a very interesting Booker short-listed novel, so interesting that I finished it in one day.
ReplyDeleteCurrently reading Milan Kundera's Laughable loves. I need to do it a lot faster!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great suggestions! I'm reading lots of short stories by Alice Munro (one of my favorite authors!), you should check her out :)
ReplyDeleteI love that you give yourself the out on your books, I tend to stick with them and just take forever! I want to read the happiness project
ReplyDeleteI'm still struggling through my summer book club selection "The People of Paper". I thought I'd be done with it by now, but I haven't even started!
ReplyDeletek Food Rules, AWESOME book. i learned lots there
ReplyDeletefavorite:: breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, dinner like a pauper
