7 Foods Experts Say Not To Eat

As women, we are always on the search for foods and products that will keep us forever young, feeling healthier, slimmer and more energized. Just as important as it is to be aware of foods that are good for us, on the flip side it's always important to be wise to foods that we should probably avoid as well. Here is a look at a new list of foods which some experts name as foods to avoid.

  • Microwave Popcorn, according to Olga Naidenko, PhD, a senior scientist for Environmental Working Group, says that chemicals in the lining of the bag, which include perfluorooctanoic (PFOA) are linked to infertility and possibly even certain cancers. When you microwave the corn, the chemicals are released and end up in your snack, and accumulate in your system for years. Fix: Pop in a skillet.
  • Non Organic Potatoes. Jeffrey Moyer, chair of the National Organic Standards Board, confirms that potatoes get their nutrients directly through the skin, also sponging any toxic chemicals that come down the water pipeline. Moyer, also a Farm Director at Rodale Institute adds, “I’ve talked with potato growers who say point-blank they would never eat the potatoes they sell. They have separate plots where they grow potatoes for themselves without all the chemicals." Fix: Always buy organic potatoes.
  • Conventional Apples. Expert Mark Kastel, co-director of the Cornucopia Institute, a farm-policy research group that supports organic foods, says that of all the fall fruits, apples are the most pesticide laden by far. The reason being is they are individually grafted {descended from a single tree} to maintain a consistent, distinct flavor and thereby lack a natural ability to resist pests. Fix: Always buy organic apples.
  • Farmed salmon is treated much like factory chickens, crammed into pens and fed everything they don’t normally eat {think poop}. Besides mercury, they contain high levels of PCBs, brominated flame retardants, carcinogens and pesticides such as dioxin and DDT. "You can only safely eat one of these salmon dinners every five months without increasing your risk of cancer," says David Carpenter, MD, director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University of Albany. Fix: Buy wild-caught Alaska salmon.
  • Also on the list is Corn Fed Beef and Milk Produced with Artificial Hormones.
For the best organic food, eat what is grown closest to you. If you need help finding your local farmer check out Local Harvest.

  6. what a great list. Thanks for the info ...I kind of freaked out about the pop corn ..I used to eat it in high school all the time and now it makes me blame my infertility on it ...lol. I ALWAYS buy organic apples ...NOW ...but when I was a kid, my mom didn't and on top of that rarely even washed our fruit. Unbelievable, I know ...but potatoes I had no clue about ...only buying organic now ...wish I could grow my own really . :)

  10. This is fascinating. I grew up on a farm and my dad really drilled us on growing our own...easy to say when you live there, right? So I definitely do practice purchasing organic produce that is within 30 miles of where I now live (a rule of thumb from dear dad). He's a cattle farmer so the meat w/o hormones has always been big on our list too...but IVA! Microwave popcorn!! Oh noooooomoooooore Orville!

  13. hmmm, shocking (i'm being sarcastic here). it seems as though we poison ourselves with every we bite take and i just have to shake my head and wonder how we let it get this bad as a society. it's sad and definitely true that conventional farmers know better than to eat their own food but how sad is that?!

  14. ok i can live without these... not terrible!

  15. so much of our food and water is tainted. it really is frightening. on the flip side, i think the consumer is getting wise to all of this crap, and that there will be considerable pressure for farmers and factories and the like to produce cleaner and safer and healthier food. it will cost more FOR SURE, but it is worth it.

  24. thanks for the info. definitely will keep it in mind.

i've been hearing about so many health hazards when using the microwave these days. Everything that goes in that machine seems to have some sort of effect on the food (besides the temperature).

  25. GREAT advice. Thank you! Where I can, I eat organic food and it's amazing how much better it tastes! I think the little extra money it costs to buy organic it totally worth it.

  28. the other thing that is crazy about farm raised salmon is that it doesn't cut down on over fishing because they use 3 pounds of wild fish to raise each pound of salmon!!
    ugh.
sometimes it amazes me the things we eat.
