Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. They are used to build muscles, bones, skin, hair, internal organs and fluids. Amino acids make enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters and chemical messengers that regulate our body, form antibodies, and carry oxygen. We need all 20+ amino acids to make the 50,000+ proteins we need to live. Your muscles and heart are
95% made up of amino acids.
Some of the things amino acids do:- Improve heart and lung function
- Stimulate serotonin, elevating mood and well being
- Assist muscle recovery after a workout
- Support cardiovascular & nervous system function
- Stimulate production of dopamine & norepinephrine, boosting energy, helping depression & chronic pain
Of all the amino acids, twelve can generate on their own. However, the remaining eight, the essential amino acids, are needed from proteins in outside food sources. Foods like meat, fish, eggs and dairy products are all rich in essential amino acids. Some plant proteins, might not have all essential amino acids, but if you are a vegetarian don't worry! Soy products are high in protein and practically thought of as equal to meat in essential aminos. Beans, legumes,
quinoa, and hempseed are great sources, as well as
nuts and seeds.
As always, it's best to eat a well balanced diet with a complementing mixture, all in moderate amounts.
You learn something new everyday ;)
