Preserve Your Makeup

In the beginning of the year, we talked a bit about the importance of keeping makeup brushes clean to maintain healthy makeup practices. Unfortunately as you know, I hold on to makeup way past its expiration date. Which is just awful because reusing makeup after its expiration date, means we are rubbing germs and bacteria all over our face. Potentially causing acne breakouts, infections and skin irritations.

If you have a hard time following makeup expiration dates, as I do, the next best thing we can do is try and be more wise with how we store our makeup to prolong its healthy lifespan.
  • Store in a cool, dark place. While the bathroom drawers might be super convenient, the humidity from the shower makes your makeup more susceptible to breed bacteria.
  • Shave pencils. Sharpen off the top of eyeliner and lip liner pencils every week to reduce bacteria build-up.
  • Tightly screw caps back on. The less oxygen your makeup is exposed to, the longer it lasts.
  • Extend the shelf life of cream-based products like foundation and concealer by placing them in the fridge. Generally, they last anywhere from three months to a year, but if you are applying with your finger their lifespan is shorter.

  1. Great reminder! I don't know how many Clinique Bonus Time makeup thingies I have floating around all my many many makeup bags. Purge time!

  2. Put foundation in the fridge?? I never heard of that, but mine usually get so soupy because I leave it in the bathroom & maybe from the steam it gets too hot. I think I'm going to try that.

I try to clean my make-up brushes as often as possible.

  3. my cousin taught me to wash my brushes every 2 weeks at least. it's saved me from a lot of break outs, i just put a dot of shampoo in the palm of my hand and spin it in there-everytime i feel a slight break out coming! it always stops it! :)

  4. excellent tips! makeup is so damn expensive, and i try to make it last. but i sure don't want it to break out my skin, so it really isn't worth it/healthy to make it last TOO long!

p.s. i guess i should throw out those lipsticks and lip glosses that are YEARS old! yes, i should! i think i have some from my high school/college years which was LONG LONG AGO!

  7. These tips are fab. I have to work on throwing out makeup when its expiration date has passed (although I am pretty good about mascara) and washing my brushes more!

  15. I am so bad with my make up. I keep it for years because I love the colours so much! Lately though, I've done some throwing out and while it was sad I know my face thanks me for it.
