{image}Historically, aphrodisiacs were first looked at as a remedy for various sexual anxieties including fears of inadequate performance as well as a need to increase fertility. In early times nutrition was a key factor, as food was not readily available, and undernourishment can create a loss of libido as well as reduces fertility rates. The separation was made between foods that increased fertility versus ones that simply increased sex drive. Substances that by nature represent seed or semen were considered to have sexual powers. Other types of foods were considered stimulating by their "physical resemblance to genitalia".
So, if your in the mood to pack on the love heat, put your chef hat on and work with some of these natural aphrodisiacs that also have health benefits ;)
AVOCADO: Rich in folic acid, vitamin B6 and potassium, avocados have similar histamine-boosting superpowers as asparagus. Its aphrodisiac effect has also been said to come from a component named bromocriptine, which in certain conditions, can influence the functioning of certain glands.
DARK CHOCOLATE: Pure chocolate contains phenethylamine, which releases dopamine in the pleasure centers of the brain and helps induce feelings of excitement during orgasm.
GARLIC: Since two garlic breaths cancel each other out, garlic is full of allicin, an ingredient that increases blood flow. Garlic is also considered to treat the common cold and acne due to its anti-bacterial component. Tic Tac, anyone? ;)
GINGER: Raw, cooked or crystallized ginger root is a stimulant to your circulatory system. Ginger reduces pain and inflammation, provides relief from migraines and menstrual cramps and has been proven effective in the treatment of morning sickness.
FIG: Figs became known as aphrodisiacs because its shape is said to resemble female organs. They are also packed with amino acids that improve sexual stamina, and are a great source of potassium, fiber and calcium.
PINEAPPLE: High in the enzyme bromelain and vitamin C, pineapples, the natural healer, is used in the homeopathic treatments for impotence.
VANILLA: The scent of vanilla is said to increase lust and cure male impotency. In 1762, a German physician claimed that 342 impotent men were changed into astonishing lovers from sipping on vanilla decoctions. The aroma of vanilla also triggers the release of serotonin, a feel-good neurotransmitter that causes satisfaction.
