Natural Ways to Combat PMS

For a few days every month Aunt Flow comes for a visit and our mood swings faster then we can keep up with. But before your throw on your sweats, your man's white tee and plop yourself on the couch watching reruns of your favorite show, consider some nature ways to ease the visit.

Combat PMS with some of these foods:

Belly Bloat: Water, whole grains, brown rice, asparagus, celery, sweet potatoes, bananas and chamomile tea.

Nervousness, Anxiety {and/or Stress} Backaches & Cramping: Water, chamomile tea, bananas, nuts {almonds and sunflower seeds} , oatmeal, leafy greens, lentils, figs and soybeans.

Food Cravings: Water, whole grains, brown rice and bananas.

Breast Tenderness: Water, Olive Oil, avocados, asparagus and celery.

Mood Swings: Water, chamomile tea and bananas.

{this is a short list of healthy foods that can help, there are others as well ;) }

Things to try and avoid:

Sugar and Dairy: Dairy products and sugar can increase magnesium excretion, which can lead to nervousness, cramping and backaches.

Alcohol and Caffeine: Both can cause dehydration, and caffeine can increase estrogen levels which makes PMS symptoms worse. Alcohol can intensify symptoms, such as depression and headaches.

Salty Foods: Sodium drastically increases bloating before and during your period.

Have you ever thought about what's in your tampons?

The average menstruating female will use about 16,000 tampons in her lifetime. Which makes it incredibly surprising that they are no federal regulations concerning listing ingredients in tampons. Not too comforting considering we're slipping chlorine-bleached rayon cotton blends in our va-jay-jays. And rayon produces dioxins, which is a toxic carcinogen {cancer causing agent}.

Consider using organic cotton tampons, such as Seventh Generation Chlorine-Free Organic Tampons or Natracare Certified Organic All-Cotton Tampons, which will decrease the risk of direct exposure from chemicals and fertilizers used in growing non-organic cotton.

Happy Friday Friends! Have a super Easter Weekend!

  11. I don't use tampons. I'm a maxi pad girl. :P So that's another reason for me to totally discard the idea of ever wearing one.

  13. I use organic tampons about 1/2 the time. I admit it's hard when I go to Costco and can get a gigantic box of Playtex for a fraction of the cost of a small box of organic ones. But I guess my va-jay-jay is worth it...

    great post!
