Flash Point vs. Smoke Point
Smoke-point is the temperature to which an oil can be heated before it smokes, and generates
toxic fumes and harmful free radicals { the oil will give off unpleasant odors and flavors to your food} At the flash point , there are wisps of flames...and at fire point...umm there is a fire ;)The best oils for cooking are those that have a high smoking point {they can be heated to high temperatures before burning}. Grapeseed oil has a high smoke point of 420 degrees- fantastic for stir-frying, sauteing & baking. It has a clean, light taste that holds flavor really well.
Health Benefits:
- High in linoleic acid {healthy omega fatty acids} rich in vitamins C and E, flavonoids, and beta-carotene.
- Reduces bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol levels in the body.
- Some studies have shown that Grape Seed Extract may be helpful in preventing the growth of cancerous cells in the stomach, colon, prostrate and lung. Also believed to improve vision, flexibility of joints and blood circulation.
Happy Monday! I hope you had a great Easter Weekend!

ReplyDeleteI've never used grape seed oil before, how cool that it can be used at such high temps. Very good for me because my boyfriend always says I could burn water hahah
ReplyDeleteI love useful information like that. I use olive oil for everything and yes, you're absolutely right about it becoming toxic for you if it reaches a certain temperature. That's why I use it at low temperatures on the stove.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering though.....if it applies to oven cooked food as well? Because I often use olive oil as the base for a sauce for grilled chicken or fish.
Great post!
Hope you had a wonderful Easter!
