Goji berries are chewy in texture with a tangy taste. Historically used in Asian dishes, the shriveled berry has been Westernized in smoothies, teas, juices, crunch bars, cereals, and pure. It's rich in antioxidants, beta-carotene, amino acids and potassium, in TCM it's thought to harmonize functions of the entire body. The recommended daily serving of 10 to 30 grams gives you more vitamin C , beta-carotene, and potassium than oranges, carrots, and bananas.
While some marketers have built a bit of a false hype around the little berry, it does have nutrients that encourages a healthy lifespan, when supplemented with a whole, well rounded diet.
Forever Young via Goji Berry:
- Protects our DNA to help decelerate the aging process
- Retains moisture & stimulates collagen production for younger looking skin
- Protects skin from sun damage
- Decreases stress & improves vision
- Reduces the risk of allergies {respiratory & skin reactions}
- Regulates blood sugar, detoxifies liver and aids in digestion
- Controls cholesterol and blood pressure
- Reduces inflammation
- Goji berries help convert food to energy and not store it as fat
- Helps control appetite with a lower glycemic index
- Promotes lean muscle
- Assists in recovery to stimulate muscle regeneration
- Review the ORAC score. The ORAC scale is used by the USDA to measure antioxidant potency. For antioxidants to be most effective, appropriate levels need to be consitent in the body. Goji berries are said to have about 250 per gram
- Go for the organic
- Avoid the overly bright red or bright orange berries {they are higher in sulfites}
- Buy the berries rather then juice {but if you do prefer the juice, buy in glass bottles}
Have a super day!
