Flowers light up any room and are great mood boosters. Unfortunately to keep them looking pretty, importers load them with pesticides, which are
not regulated by the USDA because they are not ingested. Toxic chemicals make their way into your home, and once they start to dry you toss them and then pesticides pollute the ground and water, creating a never ending cycle. With a recent report finding that
commercially grown roses contain 1,000 times the amount of cancer-causing pesticides when compared with food products, its probably good to look into ways we can be
eco-friendly when buying
florals.
- Buy Local & Organic: go to local farmers who practice growing sustainable, organic florals without the use of toxic pesticides. Buying locally, you avoid transportation pollution from overseas.
- Limit Water Usage: after steaming your veggies don’t throw the water away; use it to feed your house plants and flowers with mineral-rich boosters.
- Reuse: vases & eco-friendly ribbons.
- DIY: Branching is a great element to use in your designs. In the winter, you can find pine cones, berries and branches to work into florals, and reuse them throughout the seasons.
Ecoforms, {based in Santa Rosa, Cali} offers all-natural pots that last for 5 years outdoors and up to twice as long inside before they breakdown into nutrient-rich organic matter ;)
Happy Thursday!
Great advice & very appreciated! Happy Thursday to you x
ReplyDeleteGreat facts and thoughts Iva!
ReplyDeleteLove the one about using the veggie water to pour those nutrients on your plants! Never thought of that!
And that is WILD that those roses are so contaminated! Ugh!
I love to use pinecones and branches in arrangements! I am always hauling things out of the woods! Ha...haha!
Happy day sweet Iva!
Great advice... I will have to rememeber this. I wish I could have flowers in my house more often... but my kitty boys eat them and them puke everywhere... yikes!

ReplyDeleteThis is an amazing post! I found out about toxic flowers a couple years ago when working hardcore on my eco biz and omg it was really eye-opening! I like to grow my own and use them in my house mostly ...especially the leaves. I'm so glad you posted this ...and the photo you used is adorable!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any plants inside the house because I'm scared they'll attract insects. But good tips as always. ;p
ReplyDeleteooo awesome advice. i really dont like flowers because they do die easily and i actually hate their smell (both due to the chemicals), but these tips are really helpful! thanks iva :)

Never thought of using the water from steamed veggies, great tip!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIva, how I love you did this post!!! I didn't know I could reuse the water from steamed veggies! I don't think it's advertised enough that flowers are full of cancerous pesticides! I definitely reuse all my vases and ribbons, my husband hates that I save everything to reuse...someday he'll thank me!
ReplyDeleteGreat advice! ANd I had no idea about the number of pesticides in the flowers... scary.
ReplyDeleteThis is a fabulous reminder and a good nudge for me to plant more 'cutting' flowers in my garden. Gross to think of the chemicals coming in the house like that.
ReplyDeletei just watched "food inc" yesterday, and it seriously changed my life. this post hits home even more with that concept & now i really really want my own garden!!
ReplyDeleteHow informative! And what a completely great idea about using the water from steamed veggies to give flowers a mineral boost.
ReplyDeleteI also use two drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract to keep my flowers fresher; and keep the water from getting too funky.
Thanks for visiting my blog - I definitely know a few folks who will love this post!
Best,
Tara
