Beans,Beans, The Musical Fruit...The More You Eat, The More You Toot ;)

There was a time when I was thoroughly embarrassed about all things "down there". You know, like turn all immature at even the idea of going to the gyno's office. Or, gas? Who, me?! No way, never. Yeah, right. After having visited the ob-gyn a gazillion times with each pregnancy and given birth, with random people staring at my cha-cha with a huge beaming florescent light directed at it, I've lost the snicker that used to come along with bodily function talk. While, I may not have totally lost all inhibitions, and clearly don't find poop as exciting and awesome to look at as my 3 year old Little Man does, I am at a point in my life were I can, almost with an entirely straight face, speak about irregularity. Lucky for you, because today I am taking the mature approach about constipation. Seriously, did you know that four million Americans have frequent constipation, accounting for 2.5 million physician visits a year, mostly women. Horrible.

If ever there was good news about constipation, it's the fact that it is a symptom, and is usually temporary. Common causes of constipation are:

Not enough fiber in the diet
Changes such as pregnancy, aging, and travel
Lack of physical activity
Medications
Milk
IBS
Dehydration

So, some ways to try and stay on track are to drink lots of water and exercise, which you already do, right? Right! You can also add some mulberry juice to your diet, which contains many minerals and vitamins, as well as stimulates digestion and assimilation of nutrients in the small intestine. Also, grandma was totally right about those prunes...just be watchful of how many your down ;)

constipation is horrid! a big pain in the a**! a hahhaha. i USUALLY don't have this problem, but once after eating a bunch of asparagus i was in so much pain! could not do my business for days! miserable! it really is just nice when everything functions as it should without intervention or pain!

Another one: hormones. There is a window right before my period where everything comes out then everything clogs up. That's how I know my period's coming. Haha! TMI!

I never have this problem...wanna know why? I'm a beaner and I looooove beans aka fiber. Also, I drink lots of water. Mmhmm...oh wait. But I do also eat cheese and I know that shit clogs you up big time. Ok I lied. I get constipated...rarely. ha!

I love talking poopoo with you and your cha cha. Bwahahaha!!!

Having kids definitely takes all modesty, crumples it up and tosses it out. I didn't even care who was in the room when I'd whip a boob out for Ellie's dinner time. LOL!!

Iva you are so funny! Everybody poops is one of my favorite books - even before I had the crumb! And greens juice (full of fiber too) is also a good daily source of 'smooth moves'.

Hello! Thank you for stopping by my blog for a visit and your sweet comments! This is an interesting post! You have done a great job writing about a subject that most people would avoid. Having children means always talking about "poo" and "pee"! Can't get away from those!

I can't agree more... I have constipation problems myself, maybe from having too much soda in my diet. I know I have to drink more water but I'm just too stubborn.

Love this book... and love the "beans" song. We used to sing it when were kids when my dad would "toot" and blame it on a frog... or the dog once we finally got one ;)
My friends have all said the same thing- that any shame or discretion you may have had goes out the window after giving birth.... oh boy, can't wait for that someday ;)

interesting, i've never heard of mulberry juice.
i do drink tons of water, close to 100 ounces a day. i heart water big time ;)
i used to read this book many years ago at the daycare i worked at, the kids loved it. haha!!

This is definitely a post for the hubby..he loves to talk about it, laugh about it, think and ponder about it..you name it..but ya know what it must pay off because he is never constipated..I kinda wish he were sometimes..if ya know what I mean..not the rest of us gals (me and ma girlz)though we cant even eat cheese too much..and believe me I feed the hubs cheese too but it doesnt do any good..anyway Im rambling on..and on..but thanks for those tips..never heard the Mulberry juice before..Ill try that..!

Oh my goodness - you have no idea how true the fiber portion is. Have you tried the Fiber One granola bars? They're probably the tastiest, somewhat healthy granola bar available. But each time I have one, it leads to the worst gas imaginable! I won't eat them anymore and it's a shame!

I'm all for the water...lots and lots of it, but I can't do the prunes...hope I never have to...but I would if I needed to, of course ;)

A subject I'm never fond of discussing but one that is so important! And sad how few of us (statistically speaking) get our daily allowance of fiber... or even water!

Have you seen this book?

It's not the most classy book but little boys LOVE it!

Hahaha, reminds me of the old man of 70 who complained to his doctor, "doctor, my tummy goes every morning at 6, easy and soft!"
Doc said, "but sir that is wonderful, it is absolutely fantastic and very healthy to be regular."
Old man,"Yes Doc, but I only wake up at 7..."

Thanks for sharing with us, (you have a really hilarious way of telling it) my little boy is also now just over 3 and he has now learned about gas, and burping... so now I am dreading the day that he will let go of a loud one in a quiet church, or in an elevator filled with people and my face turn red and everyone will think it was me...lol.... guess that happens to everyone. Like your little one turns to you in a packed elevator and asks at the top of his voice, "daddy, why is the auntie so fat?" and then pointing at the over sized woman in the corner...

Anyway, I have now hogged enough space, thanks for your kind words on my last post, really enjoy hearing from you!

Have a gas free day!
Colin.

Weirdest thing ever- I have not thought of this book in literal years yet I spoke about it earlier today with my boyfriend and then came to your page and you blogged about it - CRAZY! Great post, getting real with life's issues we all try to mask is nothing short of wonderful.

Very interesting topic indeed. I have found that coffee helps me in the morning with more than just waking up. TMI...

We had this book in a library that I worked at before - it was always guaranteed to make the kids snicker.

I love this post for being so honest and addressing a subject that so many people are afraid of. Women especially have sort of been "taught" not to speak about thinks like bodily functions and such. I had friends who even in their early 20s had still never gone to gyno! It boggles my mind. Anyway, great post!

Pretty Tini said...

Lol; I agree. Prune juice works. Activia (sp) blended in Dannon yogurts works well too. But trust me, I've noticed a change of being more gaseous than ever (mostly since moving on my own) so I'm still trying to track down what foods or vitamins I'm not getting enough of. For the times being, all I drink is water, milk, juice... not a big soda drinker.

All with age ***sigh***

Nikolett said...

Aww, one of my close friends gave her boyfriend that book after they watched a movie that had it ... one with Steve Carell, totally forget the name right now.

But yes, that list worries me because I'm an AVID milk-drinker and I get dehydrated very easily. Looks like I'll have to change that now! Haha :)

daisychain said...

I guess I'm not afraid of saying I'm chronically constipated. An x-ray of my stomach was quite an eye opener for a doctor once!

Down and Out Chic said...

haha, good points you have here! i think so many americans probably have constipation because of an imbalanced diet. junk food and a lot of preservatives will do great numbers on the digestive track. the preponderance of food allergies has also done a number on many people.
