While I know how important it is to wash makeup brushes often, I have to admit I fall short. Very short. Gross, I know. Ideally for brushes that we use for liquid makeup, we should be washing those everyday, and for brushes used with powder we should wash those every 2-3 weeks. Skipping on washing brushes often can lead to clogged pores and bacterial infections as they harbor dirt and bacteria. Needless to say, really good brushes can practically be a small investment, washing them helps them last longer, keeps the makeup going on smoothly, and prevents colors from possibly turning out muddy. When I
do wash my brushes I gently run them under lukewarm water and usually use
Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo. But, to help me step up my brush care I have been looking for a few new options ;)
Since I love my current brushes, I do not think I will be changes lines any time soon. But, if I find myself still slacking on maintaining my brushes, I will look into the
Clinique Antibacterial Brush Collection.
I use Johnson&Johnson baby shampoo on mine!
ReplyDeleteI wash mine every 2 weeks. But Im looking for new brushes because my son threw my mac brushes in the toilet.. *YUCK*
ReplyDelete** I have an award for you.. Check in about a 1/2 hour =)
i do it once a month. but i clean them with softsoap, and i am SURE that is a bit harsh and that i should find an alternative!
ReplyDeleteFuck! I dunno...every once in a blue moon. I'm bad. Guess that's why I'll get one of those ginorm pimples that lasts for days. Ha! So gross.
ReplyDeleteoh i wish i did not know this...i never wash my brushes really, i suppose luckily i lose them often so I buy new ones a good amount!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.heatherinacandyshop.com
Never. In fact I dropped mine two weeks ago and I just threw it away.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty bad about this too. Maybe once a month? Less than that? I'm gross ;)
ReplyDeleteoh i am HOOORRRRIBLE at this! maybe once every 6 months?!?! i am definitely going to look into those clinque brushes!!! i love the idea of an anti bacterial brush!
ReplyDeleteummm, i'm really gross b/c my makeup brushes don't really get washed :( i really like the idea of the wipes, that's something i could remember to use.
ReplyDeletei use disposable sponges for liquid makeup and try to replace them regularly so maybe they're not that gross???
um, i just did mine but let's say that i had not in a LONG time...
ReplyDeletei even bought new brushes from sephora!
I'm pretty bad about it too but I am getting better. I really want to buy Trish McEvoy brushes because she practically invented makeup brushes that we use today and has such great quality.
ReplyDeleteIm so anal about brush hygene. I wash them all the time! Also because i use a lot of shimmery products and shimmer spreads so easily.. i have to wash them or I could end up with sparkling cheeks instead of eyes!! xx
ReplyDeleteI don't wash mine really either even though I know better. I just bought brand new ones though and should start soon...
ReplyDeletei like the wipes! i dont wash them as often as i should, I bought recently the shampoo from bare minerals, and its quite good, will have to wash them soon! thanks for the reminder
ReplyDeleteUm, never.
ReplyDeleteAt least, I can't remember the last time I did.
Guess that's bad.
Think I will go wash them now....
I don't do it nearly enough. I use Johnson's baby shampoo on mine.
ReplyDeleteI'm so bad and when I don't know how to wash them I just buys new ones....waste of money I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteHaha, I'll join the club of not washing my brushes. I know I should be, but I never do. I did for a stint of time, but it didn't last long.
ReplyDeleteI wash my powder ones once a week - and if i use liquid foundation I wash it right away. I just use Johnson baby shampoo and my brushes are in great shape. For a quick wash in between just use mac brush cleaner on a kleenex - works the same as the wipes and last forever. Also really conditions your brushes.
ReplyDeleteOh God. This is the part where I admit I don't use brushes at all. Fingers make my makeup blend much more nicely, when I do attempt to put makeup on at all :)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea to use Neutrogena shampoo ~ will have to try that! Thanks, Iva!
ReplyDeletexoxox,
CC
i honestly didnt know all that could happen.
ReplyDeletegeesh thanks for sharing.
xoxoxox
Hmmmm... every two weeks if I don't forget. Hahaha! I use Neutrogena shampoo too.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I read the first few sentences, I realized it's probably been a good 2 months (gaaahhh I cringe when I write that!) since I've washed them. So I went and washed them before I read the rest of this entry hehe. Usually I use baby shampoo, just because it's gentle. But thanks for these tips and other options! :)
ReplyDeletelet's see. it's 2010. carry the 2. think. think. think.
ReplyDelete...umm let's just say it's been awhile since i washed mine!! :)
but thanks for the reminder, iva! that's why i love ya! xxoo
have a great night!
this is too funny girl! I just washed out my brushes this morning (I use the Bobbi Brown brush collection however I also use the brushes from Bare Escentuals as well). I fall short too, to be completely honest I think I wash mine once a month, ugh that sounds disgusting. I just use a very mild detergent (Dawn works really well--just a LITTLE) and I soak them in warm soapy water overnight. I leave them out to dry on a terry cloth towel and they're good to go in a few hours.
ReplyDeleteHappy Tuesday!
Man, I only clean mine like once a month. And I know I should like every two weeks.
ReplyDeleteIt's really gross when you stop and think about it.
Actually now that you've reminded me... I'm off to scrub those puppies.
Hmm...yes, the Clinique antibacterial brush could be a good solution for me! I'm so bad at doing regular cleaning on my brushes too :S Apparently M.A.C has a great brush cleaner as well.
ReplyDeleteI totally fall short too! Those brush guards are a great idea. Something to consider.
ReplyDeleteGood reminder! I think I wash my brushes as often as I change out my toothbrush... Eep!
ReplyDeleteiamemmamusic.blogspot.com
La la la la... 8-)
ReplyDeleteMMM not as much. They just take FOREVERRR to dry!!!! LOL. I have a few sets thankfully.
I am very very guilty of not washing my brushes. Yuck I can imagine how many nasty germs on my face, better wash the brushes quick!
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty good, I use Johnson's baby shampoo which I share with my dogs...I love the scent of baby product somehow~

Oh, sure, call us out on the carpet on this one Iva! lol
ReplyDeleteWell, coming from a girl who cut her eye with the corner of one of my brushes, and then got a STAPH infection in the cut my brush gave me...just a tiny little scratch on my eyelid nearly killed me...no joke....there are pictures of my unrecognizable face over at my blog...look at the archives for....oh heck, just cut and paste this into your browser and scroll down, you'll see what I mean:
http://hoscorners.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html
and i promise you, ya'll be scrubbing those brushes and boiling them with bleach when you're done!
just consider my a public service announcement...or after school special if you will.... ;)

~hl~
I only use my brushes for powder makeup, and um... I don't think I've ever washed them. I guess I need to change that.
ReplyDeleteI've been terrible but recently I read a post on cleaning brushes weekly - I don't think I was ever that good about it. But every 2 weeks I can do. I do love how they feel the day after cleaning though.
ReplyDeleteInteresting...and very good reminder! I think I just grossed myself out thinking about what could be lurking between the bristles of my kubuki brush. Guess I'm cleaning my brushes this weekend! :-)
ReplyDeleteNot as often as I should - thanks for the reminder, Iva!
ReplyDeletei just washed mine this week, but before that it had been a while. :/ not good, since i was a makeup artist in a former life, and should know better... ;)
