The fear that the number 13 brings bad luck, aka triskaidekaphobia. Apparently, most airports do not have a "Gate 13". Topeka, Kansas has zip codes 66612 and 66614, but seems to skip 66613.
Paraskevidekatriaphobia, is the term for the fear of Friday the Thirteenth.
If a black cat crosses your path, bad luck will come.
or
If a black cat comes towards you, it will bring you good luck, but if it walks away from you it will take good luck with him/her.
In England black cats are believed to bring good fortune.

Spilling Salt
To avoid bad luck, after an accidental spilling of salt, throw a pinch of salt over your left shoulder.
Historically, salt has been highly valued. The Romans paid their soldiers in salt, the origin of the word "salary". It has long been used as a medicine, superstition to purify, bless things, and drive away evil.

Walking under a ladder will bring bad luck.
Breaking a mirror will bring 7 years of bad luck BUT taking the pieces outside and burying them in the moonlight can avoid the bad luck.

No superstitions here! But the Mr. is a baseball coach so of course he has some. When they involove not taking off/washing an item of clothing that has been worn during a win for several games, the item of clothing must remain in the locker room. It is not allowed in my house until it has been washed. In the locker room's washing machine.
ReplyDeleteI try not to(have black cat), but sometimes I really can't help myself...but I try to think about the good thing, so I'll take that one about itchy pals...actually, it's itching right now!! :)
ReplyDeleteOhhh....V's number is 13. Maybe THAT'S his problem...
ReplyDeleteBut, nah, I don't really have any superstitions.
Oh Iva.... I'm so very superstitious it's sad :) I hadn't heard of 'touching wood' but it's becoming my new ritual now.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever heard about not putting hangers on your bed? And not putting your purse on the floor? Those are also supposed to be bad luck.
So sad.
ummm...not really but i do say "knock on wood" a lot. mainly because i enjoy knocking on wood.
ReplyDeleteNot really, though I don't like talking about things before they actually happen...like saying them out loud will ruin it somehow...weird I know ;)
ReplyDeletefirst off, that black cat and the hugging ghost salt shakers are way too cute! ahaha. great finds.
ReplyDeletealso i only believe in the breaking mirrors superstition, i dont know why...plus if i needed to check my face for fug id def be in a foul mood to find a broken mirror!
I dont open umbrellas indoors... and are careful about breaking mirrors.... and also, knock on wood, kiss yellow lights and wish on stars... ahhh.. i guess i am!! hahah xxxooo
ReplyDeleteNo, I'm not really superstitious, just careful! I found your blog through 20 Something Bloggers... it's great and I started following you!
ReplyDeleteHope you check out my blog sometime...
great post. i have to admit that i am very superstitious.
ReplyDeleteI always avoid walking on the drain grates on city sidewalks, and I do not like to walk under ladders either. Always lift both feet when I go through a yellow light, and I always make a wish when I blow out birthday candles.
ReplyDeletehehe, fun post. Superstitions are kind of eerie. I do knock on wood, but that's about it. I remember finding out that triskaidekaphobia (sp?) meant the fear of #13 years ago and I thought it was so neat there was an actual word for it. And what a long, hard to pronounce word!
ReplyDeleteAren't all cats at some point going to walk away from you, as they are cats and therefore the jerks of the animal kingdom? lol
ReplyDeleteA few years ago when it was June 6th, 2006, some people were getting verrrry nervous...and as usual, nothing happened. :)
I'm pretty superstitious, but it's mostly about weird small things like lottery tickets. Once in a while, I will buy myself a scratch off lottery ticket. If I win a small sum of money, I keep the ticket uncashed and tell myself that something GOOD is sure to come my way. :)
ReplyDeleteLove those embracing ghost shakers!
such a killer post!!!
ReplyDeleteit is funny to think of all the superstitions we have. my dad told me once that baseball players are the most superstitious of all!!! hahah. not sure if that is true.
i TRY not to buy into superstitions, but i have broken a couple of mirrors, and i'd be lying if i didn't say that it left me with a sense of DOOM!
i love superstitions! they're so fun!! we grew up with the itchy palm one and i didn't know other people knew about that!! i thought my mom was just crazy!! lol
ReplyDeletei would say i'm not superstitious person at all....at least i don't think i am ;)
ReplyDeletefun post though!
I'm superstitious sometimes, but most of time I don't notice things or forget about what I did 5 seconds later.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe....
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment! I'm really glad you like the polaroids!
the singular
Nope, but Friday the 13th is kinda in the back of my mind sometimes!
ReplyDeleteI'm not particularly superstitious, but I think the idea of them is a little fun.
ReplyDeleteI work at a local magazine and we did a video piece for our Web site on a local hospital and their new operating rooms. They don't have an O.R. 13.
"Breaking a mirror will bring 7 years of bad luck BUT taking the pieces outside and burying them in the moonlight can avoid the bad luck."
ReplyDeletePractical advice. :)
i tend to make up superstitions. and beleive them all.
ReplyDeleteOddly enough, 13 is my lucky number. I was born on the 13th, so there ya go. Hasn't failed me yet!
ReplyDeletethe majority of hotels, and actually all buildings with elevators in them, do not have a 13th floor...crazy! i happen to like that number =)
ReplyDeletenot really but my dad is pretty superstitious. every-time he leaves for the airport he drives a certain way out of the neighborhood even though it isn't the shortest way no matter how late he is.
ReplyDeleteLOL when my left eye twitches, I think something bad is going to happen!
ReplyDeleteMy mom is really really superstitious. She believes that shoes on the table is bad luck, and that a rocking chair that rocks when no one is sitting in it, means someone is dieing. I'm not sure what I believe, but she gets really mad at me when I rock the empty chair with my foot :)
ReplyDeletei try not to be superstitious but i just cant walk under ladders x
ReplyDeleteOMG! Hubs hates how superstitious I am!!! First off, I don't think 13 is unlucky but only because its my birthday!!! Last summer, we were heading on a float trip and a black cat ran across the road. I got so upset that I made him pull over so I could call my dad before I lost reception. I wanted to talk to him just in case something did happen. When we got to our campsite, we hadn't been there 5 minutes and our friends got in a fight that was BAD!!! See-its true!
ReplyDeletesuch a fun, informative post. i don't have any superstitions.... wait. i'm sure i do, but i cannot think of one right now...
ReplyDeleteyour blog is so refreshing!!! i love it!!
ReplyDeleteOMG! I thought it was just in Puerto Rico that people believed in these things. Basically those are the ones I know, and if you go out in the rain, the FIRST RAIN of May, it brings you good luck. So everybody waits for that first rainy day, and nobody uses umbrellas or anything LOL
ReplyDeleteI own those awesome hugging salt and pepper shakers!!! Excellent choice! :)
