Makeup Expiration Dates

When it comes to food, I am highly aware of expiration dates. As in, no way would I ever even consider ingesting something that has expired. Well, knowingly at least. I gross out pretty easily too. I am open mined and am willing to try most foods at least once. With the exception of bugs in my food. Even the tiny little buggers that do not get rinsed off fully in, say... lettuce. Or, this HUGE gigantic thing that was in my Chinese take out the other night, eww gross. nasty. My whole tummy just does a flip and I can not look at the meal any more. I have noticed that for some reason, hairs, bugs, odd other random things, tend to always be in my meals. My mom makes fun of me because she, on the other hand, could be on Fear Factor and eat anything without even flinching.

I have also noticed, that people like to take you down with them, when something has either gone bad or tastes gross. They take a bite, make a face, sound a gut wrenching noise that carries across an entire vocal range spectrum, and then go "this is gross, here try it" or "I think this has gone bad, smell/try it". Seriously? You actually need me to confirm this for you? Thanks but no thanks, lets just take your word for it.

So, I wonder why I am not so on top of makeup expiration dates? I know the rough estimates when foundations, shadows, glosses, etc. have gone bad, but I do not actually follow them so well. Gasp. I know. Tisk tisk, Iva! Anyway, Cargo has a little something that I think would, hopefully help me actually pay more attention to expiration dates.

Lipgloss can grow bacteria pretty quickly, as we double dip the wand. Saliva, along with the formula, creates an environment that bacteria thrives in. At most we should hold on to a gloss 6-9 months {if you even have it that long :) }. Cargo has come up with an nifty little solution. They've embedded their glosses with Timestrip technology. We press the timing strip down into the cap of the lipgloss tube, and the Timestrip window will turn red with time. After nine months have passed the entire window will be red, and it is time to part ways with the gloss.

  2. Iva!

This is great info...never in my wildest dreams did I think about an expiration date for make-up, but it makes total sense!

You are such the 'in-the-know' tip girl!

  3. Haha....Yeah, you know where I am with expired food these days. I like Cargo's idea. I've noticed that you can totally smell when makeup's gone bad too. I have some gel liner that was perfectly fine last week, but it smells nasty this week. Lip gloss too. Actually, it's probably been bad for awhile, the smell just means it's extra, extra bad now. Eww. I need to pay more attention.

  6. that is so cool! they need to do that with mascara and everything else too. i totally ignore makeup expiration dates. bad me, i know, but usually i don't have that problem with lip gloss. it runs out way too quickly for me.

  7. This is embarrassing, but I really had not even thought about a make up expiration date! Yikes, I better dig through my make up bag! And it kills me when people try to get you to try something nasty, I believe you, I am fine and will pass on the sour milk thank you very much!

  9. like you i am FREAKED about expired food! never will it go down my throat!

unlike ME, my mom will just cut mold off of cheese and EAT IT!!! perish the thought!!!

i have to admit that i haven't really paid much to old makeup. i have a bucket of stuff that i never really dip into (except if i am EXTREMELY desperate!) that should probably be chucked!

  11. i'm a germ freak so i keep up with my makeup. i'm also a makeup whore so go through it pretty quickly anyway.

  12. I am definitely one to be careful with expiry dates. Plus I always feel that if I would not be comfortable accidently eating a little of it, I have no business rubbing it onto my skin or lips! Hope you're having an absolutely fabulous day dear :)

  13. I don't wear a lot of makeup so i am horrible when it comes to throwing it out when it's old. An experation date would be a life saver for me.

  14. Thats awesome! I watched a news segment on make up expiring but geez how am I supposed to keep track!?! Thanks Cargo and you for posting it =D

  15. Yikes. I never even think of my makeup expiration dates. Unlike food, it's not something they advertise on the product (or, at least that I can see). How scary about the lip gloss...

  16. Okkk, I should not have been eating when I read the first part of this post, haha.

I'm bad about make up expiration dates. I hold onto make up forever. That makes sense about the lip gloss though.

  20. I'm quite good at all these...I wash all my make up brushes once a week & throw away those old make ups...I refuse to try those make up testers we find at the dept/drug stores....gross me out! Am I being to paranoid here? Well, It's better to be safer than sorry I'd say~

  21. Ugh- you don't even want to know how many stale lipglosses I have laying around!

    And yes, they do smell.

    ReplyDelete
  22. That's cool. I rarely think about that either with makeup! Bad, I know!

  23. I'm pretty good about glosses and mascara(3 months tops for mascara) but I'll hang onto the oldest of my MAC eyeshadows...I figure how bad could it be, LOL? Plus I keep the containers so I can participate in their recycling program and get a free lipstick or eyeshadow :) Though I'm sure if we saw what was living in there, we wouldn't need much motivation to get rid of them.

Oh no about that thing in your food - yucky. I also don't like hair in my food, are you the same? Once went to a wedding and I found hair in every single course...all 5...including dessert. Whoever was in the kitchen was having some serious issues...

  24. People often forget about this... my doctor told me that mascara is the worst! She said there are actual bugs in it! Ewww!!

  25. That's a really smart invention! I must say I'm guilty of holding on to make-up for waaay too long! (eeew, I know right?!) I'm just waaay too lazy to have to buy something new when I know there are some leftovers still! hee(; okaay, time to wise up! thaaanks, iva (; xx

  26. Very true! Make-up should have expiration dates. As it is now, it's such a waste, but if some make-up of mine has been sitting around for almost a year I generally throw it away.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Thanks for the info!! I'm so bad with makeup expiration dates too.

    ReplyDelete
  28. i have so much makeup that i periodically go through it and try to remember how long I've had some of it. even if i barely used it but i know it's old, I'll just throw it away. better to be safe than sorry!

  29. Cargo has hit the jackpot on this idea...FAB.U.LOUS indeed!!!
Ewwww bugs in your food is the worst. I was somewhere last week and they served me a tray with a tiny one on it. I jumped back so fast...and the waitress saw my reaction and did the same. She immediately got me a new dish, but honestly...my appetite had gone. ~VAMOOSHED~

  30. What an amazing idea! I am horrible w/ makeup and expiration dates...sometimes the packaging is just too cute to throw away! Cargo's idea is perfect for this though! Hope you have a lovely Friday! :)

  31. O my god, shame on me! There's make up in my basket that I've had for years! Granted, most of it remains unused but I never knew there was an expiration date on it. Thanks for informing us! :D

    ReplyDelete
  32. That's a great idea! They should have that on all makeup because I think most of us don't pay as much attention to makeup expiration dates as opposed to food expiration dates.

  33. Such useful information! Many thanks!

    xxLola:)

  34. That's a really good point about lip gloss!! I've heard that mascara can be dangerous if it's too old as well, but I've never heard of anyone being affected by expired mascara, so maybe that isn't true.

as for food, I know EXACTly when it's going to expire lol, I'm the same way!

  36. You know, never really think about makeup expiring. Pretty gross actually, and the fact that I spied in my makeup bag and noticed how old some of the stuff is----icky!

I need to toss half out that stuff.
