Fun In The Sun

A child born in 2000 has a 1 in 75 chance of developing skin cancer during his/her lifetime {Sun Safety Alliance} Someone born in 1930 has a 1 in 1,500 chance. Sun exposure is more dangerous now then before. Exposure to UV rays is the top culprit in skin cancers. About 70% of Americans do not take appropriate measures to protect themselves from sun exposure. {American Cancer Society} Lack of sun protection can contribute to melanoma and is also the main cause of premature aging.

One of the best things we can do for ourselves is to learn a bit more
Topic:

Sunscreen

Sunscreens have SPF, which is a number on the bottle that indicates the amount of time you can be in the sun before you begin to burn. The FDA rates sunscreen based on UVB protection. UVB rays, are the ones that causes sunburn. The higher the SPF number, the higher the percentage of UVB light is absorbed. UVA rays do not cause sunburn, but they are the kind that penetrate the skin and greatly increase our risk of skin cancer, and are contributors to wrinkles, crow's-feet and pigment changes.

Think:
UV{B}: B= Burning
UV{A}: A= Aging

Sunscreens provide two types of protection from UV light:

1) physical sunscreens
2) chemical sunscreens

Physical sunscreens, contain particles of inert minerals that form a film on skin to reflect sun's rays. Best for children and sensitive skin. If you are looking for sheer coverage, physical sunscreens are not the way to go, some tend to leave a white cast on the skin.

Chemical sunscreens, contain synthetic compounds that absorb sun rays that cause damage. They usually contain more than one ingredient, protecting us against both UVA & UVB rays. Great for residue-free coverage, not the best bet for those with allergies.

The Mayo Clinic suggests a sunscreen with both chemical and physical ingredients. Checking the 'active ingredients' will let us know if these ingredients are present.

Physical: zinc oxide, titanium dioxide
Chemical: avobenzone, oxybenzone, mexoryl

When it comes to sunscreen all that matters is actually applying it and the active ingredients. But, it's always fun to look at recommended products. Here are some "powerful skin protectors".

We should also remember to protect our hair and scalp. Twice as many cases of scalp and neck melanoma are fatal then cases on other parts of the body. One study has discovered that hair has a natural SPF of 10, and that long hair provides less SPF protection then short. Most likely due to the tendency of long hair to part, exposing more of the scalp.{Photochemistry and Photobiology}

Let's all remember to have a fun AND safe in the sun summer :)

  8. Thank you SO MUCH for doing this post. All four of my grandparents had skin cancer at some point in their life and 3 of them died of different kinds of cancer eventually. It concerns me that people don't realize how serious it is. I read (somewhere) that children who have a *serious* sun burn before a certain age (7 maybe?) have a much higher chance of getting skin cancer eventually. I don't know if that's accurate or not, but it makes sense to me.

My friends tease me about (rarely) wearing tank tops or shorts and always wearing sunscreen (my makeup has SPF 15, but I put "real" sunscreen on if I know I'm going to be outside more than just walking place to place). I just tell them that pale is the new tan and my skin will thank me when I'm 50, haha.

As someone who has had an AWFUL scalp sunburn (it blistered, owie), I totally echo the call for making sure that you put sunscreen up top too :) Thanks for the product rec's too, I'm on the prowl for some new stuff so I'll check some of them out.

Do you use any of those products and have a fave?

  9. I love that you did this post! Some people really take it for granted. Being Asian you wouldn't think I would need it as much as some who was very fair but my dermatologist said I should be wearing at least SPF 45! It's so good to be informed and reminded of what's out there - thank you :) xx

  13. Becca is so great, my good friend is the marketing director for Becca, so I get all the products first, lucky me!
Not so lucky me! I received a call last wednesday from my derm notifying me that one of my biopsies came back as skin cancer, going to have it rechecked to find out course of treatment. Gals, I am not an Uber Sun Worshiper, so be careful, even with the mildest sun exposure.

  18. this is such a good and important post! i keep seeing/reading about people still soaking up the sun, and i just don't think it is wise. products help to a certain degree, but tanning all the time is just not schmart!!!

maybe i am just getting old, wrinkled, and sensitive! my dad has had skin cancer, and my oldest sister just found out she has skin cancer on her face.

i am trying to avoid wrinkles and cancer, so i limit sun exposure, live the pale life, and wear sunscreen always! :)

  33. Such a great post. I think many also forget that sunscreen isn't just necessary when the sun is actually shining. I know in Asia they're completely paranoid about sun protection (but mainly because they don't want to tan... they don't find it aesthetic), but to some degree, there are people out there who will purposefully skip the SPF because they want to get a little brown. The Korres sunscreen is terrific by the way - that's the one I use.

  34. I'm a sunscreen addict! I try not to leave the house without it. So mainly, I stay inside, or am nocturnal. Great briefing.

  39. Wow, such great tips! I lived in Arizona for sometime and noticed my face suddenly had many freckles, even though I wore daily an SPF and one my makeup also supposedly contains. Saw the doctor about it & thankfully it's nothing to worry about, but it was enough to wake me up! Your tips here are a great addition to what I'll need to know, so thank you :-)

  40. All my friends make fun of me for being so pale. Here in Texas, the bronzer the better. Personally, I'm trying ot bring back the feudal age one pale piece of flesh at a time. Thanks so much for including information on protecting your scalp. We always forget that area and it's one of the last places someone thinks to check.
