'I've Got a Meeting in the Ladies Room, Be Back Real Soon'

So, one of the joys of being pregnant is that the hair on your legs tends to not grow so fast. Thank god because bending over a 7 pound bump to reach your ankles only to nick yourself is not my idea of fun pampering. Now that I am no longer, wearing elastic bands around my waist as fashion statements, oh, sorry, I mean not pregnant, the razor is in full use again. Lovely. In any case, my friends daughter is 5 and came home asking mommy if she could start shaving. Apparently a particular kindergarten classmate, pointed out that she has some leg hair, and in 5 year old fashion, advised that she do something about it. You'd think my friend would have taken this opportunity to explain to her that she is beautiful just the way she is and it's the inside that counts and that 5 year olds do not shave, etc. etc. etc. But no. Without a thought she said, "Well, you tell her to shave her mustache".

When did you start shaving?

  2. oh my.. that's sad.

i was 13 when i started shaving but 14 when i was actually allowed to start shaving.

also i remember that for some reason i was allowed to wear makeup at 13 but i wasn't allowed to wear mascara. i'll never understand that.

  3. 5?! That seems sooo young!

I can't remember the exact age when I started shaving (I think 12?), but I do recall my first experience with hair removal.

I was at my best friend's house and her aunt had left a bright pink bottle of Nair in the bathroom. We were too young at the time to shave. I think we were 9 or 10. Curious, we took the bottle without telling anyone and hid in her room. We both applied the Nair lotion to our legs...and had massive allergic reactions! Red blotches everywhere! Hilarious memory. :)

  11. ahaha, fabulous story! kids can be so cruel...but that mom (your friend) is sassy and fierce :D

and i loathe shaving, i think i purposely waited as long as i could before i started picking up the razor..until my friend told me to something along the lines of "please remove the gross hair buildup smothering your legs!"

  12. That is too funny! I feel for the girl...I was one with very hairy legs growing up and hated it. I don't remember when it was I started...maybe 11/12 but it wasn't soon enough :P

  13. First of all, how insane is it that the body knows to not get all hairy legs because you can't reach? That is trippy.

5 a little young...freaky how fast kids are growing up these days.

I think I started at 11?? I dunno, I just remember that I got grounded for it, because the parents said I had to wait til I was 12, and I was like yeahhh right dude. HA. Same thing happened with makeup, hair dye, etc as the years went on.

Needless to say, I was a JOY.

I love you! Cute post!!!!!!! Do you like my !!!!!!

  20. MEAN GIRLS!!! oh, girls can be so awful!!!

i got in to my dad's razor drawer at about 12. i went to town on my legs and then went for my arms. IDIOT! and, to top it all off, i cleaned the blade WITH MY FINGER after every swipe. my finger was cut to ribbons. but hairless arms? that is almost a worthy goal, but i have never done it again!

  21. Any day, girl :) We all have the right to feel that a balance can be struck between being open to inviting others into our lives while maintaining a very healthy set of boundaries. That person broke the rules, and nobody, especially women, should have to feel that our private, personal lives and family are being violated.

    Period.

  22. I am pretty sure I started shaving around 12. I remember my mom said I could start with my armpits and then we could discuss the legs. I did the legs too without telling her.

5 is way too young! Little girls need to hear they are beautiful just the way they are from the time they are born and from every day on. Because society wastes no time in telling them they are inadequate in one way or another.
*And I am getting off my soapbox now :)

  23. This is soooo funny!!!! ha ha ha ha!

  29. I started shaving at 11, in the 5th grade, when a "friend" told me my legs were hairy. I was mortified and my small little heart was so hurt!

  31. omg thats rediculous. and sary now that i am aparent, i have heard of everything being introduced to kids younger and younger!!! like they arent even alowd to just be kids anymore!

I was very young. I think a kid at school was saying something about the dark hair growing on my legs for a little while and then i was spending the night at my friends house I wan to say we were 9 we would take baths together. and she decided we should try it., she had an older sister i guess thats where she got idea

  32. I was in 1st grade when a boy made fun of me for having hair on my legs and arms so I went home and locked myself in the bathroom and shaved my legs and arms! My mom coulda killed me... from then on I got to use nair!

    ReplyDelete
  33. hahahah that is hilarious!!!! probably not the best response to teach her useful lessons about life but pretty darn funny!!

i wasn't allowed to shave until I was like 13 and then when i turned 13 my mom changed her mind and said i still wasn't allowed so i took one of my moms razors and did it anyways. i was real stubborn like that

and heck yes i'll help you plan his birthday!!

  37. i was in third or fourth grade.. so what? like 9 or 10 i think... my mom helped me and everything. idk why she encouraged it at such a young age? i don't remember being overly hairy for my age! haha. it seems funny tho because my mom didn't allow make up until 8th grade! but i could shave at age 10? hmmm...
